Tips for Reading with Your Child
Talk about the book!
Before Reading: Look through the book and talk about the pictures.
During Reading: Briefly stop to talk about what is happening and about the meanings of new words.
After Reading: Talk about what you learned and liked.
Strategies for Figuring Out Words
- Listen to whether what you are reading makes sense and matches the letters. Correct it if it doesn’t.
- Tap the sounds in the word.
- Cover up the other syllable or suffix with your finger and figure out one part at a time.
- Skip the word, read to the end of the sentence and then come back to the word.
- Look for spelling patterns you recognize.
- Look at the pictures. Do they help?
- Think of what word would make sense, sound right and match the letters.
